When I was a boy in the Midwest, my uncle took me "trotline" fishing with him and his cronies. His trotline was a heavy cord tied to at least one bank of a river, with baited hooks set about six feet apart. They caught a lot of fish and ate them later.

I wish some writers had to learn new ideas by reading their own writing. "Increasing the number of servings of whole grains in your diet by one." One serving how often? Per week? Per day? Per lifetime? By the end of the article the implication is per day, but by then I'd lost interest.

How fortunate that we don't have the political or religious reactions of the people of Pompeii to the eruption and destruction of their city. But then even silence doesn't stop some people.

Let's face it, most working-class people resent those who are college-educated, speak well and dress formally. It works that way in the military too, with many enlisted men (I was enlisted, so I saw it) bad-mouthing officers just because they are officers.

What no one likes to say (or hear) is that these people consider themselves to be vastly superior to the rest of the human race. They see themselves as royalty and the rest of us as their peasant laborers.
